Okay the holiday vacation is over & much to my disappoinment the world didn’t end on 12/21/12, leaving Kevin Costner to lead the survivors to post-apocalyoptic redemption. What did happen is the Fist Fam realeased their latest single & 1st self produced/directed/edited video.
“White Picket Fences” is the final track in the line up of their recently released album “Weekend Cult,” the song pays tribute to the group’s sacrifices over the last decade spent making quality rap music. Contrary to popular belief, there are no white picket fences for psychotic, psychedelic, shit talking rap megalomaniacs. Although the group has received many honors, garnered regional fame, and partied like Nicholas Cage in Leaving Las Vegas, it all comes at a cost. Listen closely and you can hear the groups philosophy subtly stated on the outro, “If it were easy then everybody would do it.” Many have tried, and many have failed, left to limp home with shattered livers and broken dreams. Not the Fist Fam. This tenacious group of misanthropes has been tearing clubs up across the country, leaving a wake of destruction in their path since the turn of the millennium. After spending the last six years in the alcoholic neverland known as San Francisco, the group has moved back to Asheville NC to recharge their damaged livers, chop some wood to fuel the flames of the oil lamp hash, and try the simple life for a while. Join them in spirit, with spirits. Sit back, pour a glass of the hard stuff, and enjoy.
The official motto of Gurp City South is “Eat Swine, Drink Shine Everyday”. But perhaps the unofficial motto should be “Whiskey & Wings”, because perhaps the only thing that tops our heroic consumtion of the tarantula juice is the frequency with which the crew convenes to competitively cook & eat enough spicy bird to declare a fowlacaust. What I’m saying quite franlkly is that not only will GCS drink you under the table, we are guarding enough secret recipes that I am confident we will dominate any other rap crew out there in a hot wing cook-off (with the possible exception of El Da Sensei, who cooked the wings in the above art for the single & is a Top Gun level wing man.)
This week’s free single is sort of a dedication to that lifestyle, hence the name “Hot Sauce”. It’s the 1st release off the upcoming collaborative EP by Foul Mouth Jerk & Gus Cutty titled Scofflaw which is entirely produced by Grand Invicible’s DJ Eons. The EP, perhaps not coincidentally, was recorded entirely over a 2 day period during Thanksgiving weekend in San Francisco, fueled by a steady intake of leftover baked ham sandwhiches & tallboys. All of which may pave the way for Gurp City’s motto for 2013 “Food, Booze & Shroomz”. Buckle up
Wandering San Francisco’s Tenderloin district sharing bottles with the city’s disenfranchised while espousing philosophies like “change comes from within” is what earned J-Eazy the monicker “The Bum Whisperer”. If Bum Whispering were turned into a tandem team sport, the soundtrack to stumbling drunk through the filthy city streets of the Bay, gleefully spreading inebriation & imparting wisdom would clearly be “Just The Way I Am”. Joining J-Eazy in this effort are Free Radio’s John Boy & Weekend Cult’s Philo, who co-produced the track with S.F. underground stalwart Micah Aza. Whether judiciously reflecting on the circumference of the finer sex’s hindquarters, or engaged in deep introspection on the merits of sharing your weed these gentlemen of leisure speak with the easy assurance of sporting men comfortably floating their way down the lazy river of life… beer in hand.
You could learn a lot from the day drinkers of Jones & Ellis.
Ladies & Gentlemen, THE musical extravaganza of the summer is almost upon us. The Epic mini-festival inside a festival known as Gurp Fest 2012 will undoubtedly make affairs the likes of Bonaroo & the rest seem like turds in a punch bowl. And rightly so, as the awesome power of the Gurp City crew is leveled against the livers of Asheville, during it’s biggest public celebration of the year known as Belle Chere. Beginning Friday July 27th and continuing on to Saturday the 28th, the Emerald Lounge will be presenting members of both the NC & San Francisco branches of the Olympic drinking team known as Gurp City. The line up includes Z-Man, TopR, Weekend Cult, Eddie K, GFE, Foul Mouth Jerk, Free Radio, Al lover & The Haters, as well as a myriad of DJ’s, special guests, hot dog vendors and other various delights. But there will be NO, and I cannot stress this enough, NO fire jugglers/dancers and No fucking hula hoops. Please be sure to pack at least one extra liver, and a change of clothes, as you will surely shit your socks.
The Weekend Cult is on their old-timey video grind with a new vignette that appears to have been shot in the White Chapel section of London during the era of Jack the Ripper’s reign of terror. Or maybe Jay Eazy & that puppet are just creeping me out. Whatever it is, this video is in black & white so you know it’s classy. While no one has ever accused the Cult of being understated, I think this proves that they are men of discriminating tastefulness. They are the Lincoln Continental of the rap game.
In an auspicious sea change signifying the end of an era, The Fist Fam is no more, it has ceased to be. But belching forth from the cashed ashes of the Fist, like some manner of unseemly, inebriate phoenix, comes Weekend Cult. Composed of a smarter, faster, stronger version of the exact same line up, this group is to the Fist Fam what The Six Million Dollar Man was to Steve Austin. This lofty claim is evidenced by the release of Weekend Cult’s first official body of work, a twelve song collection of the same name. Like many previous sects welcoming new members, easy entree is offered with the “name-your-own-price” option on the group’s bandcamp page, but buyer beware, there will be brainwash. Not since the fiery, apocalyptic ending of the Branch Davidians has a congregation been so hard to leave. You may have to call the Janet Reno & the ATF to get this music out of your head. Don’t take my word for it, feel free to peruse this review from Asheville’s Mountain X-press music chief Alli Marshall
Once you have become convinced by our formidable propaganda, follow the link below & become a devotee… feel free to earn a place of privilege in the Weekend Cult by donating $30 or more to the faith… or don’t, but remember the Chicken Bus only stops for the believers.
As promised this Friday marks the release party of the Fist Fam’s 3rd album release in less than a year, “Weekend Cult”. The show will be at the Elbo Room (647 Valencia, SF, CA) and will feature sets by a cadre of Gurp City members & affilliates such as Z-Man, Rec League, Grand Invincible, yours truly Foulio Iglesias and others. Spearheading this event is the release of the album’s lead single “Drinkin & Smokin” (which I suspect is actually a prequal to the “Posted” single “Drinkin”) as a free download. These guys can’t stop hitting you over the head with free music, and in my opinion this is the tightest album the Fam has put together to date. So in the words of the immortal (or perhaps just undead) Tame One “Tell a friend, tell a foe. Tell everybody you know”…
In the first year of broadcasting Wost Case Scenario we often assumed that we would be kicked off the air largely for the slapdash, lackluster, obnoxiously negligent manner of the show, or perhaps just because of the sheer heroic volume of wanton on-air drinking by the cast. In year two, between the shameless sexual harassment of female callers by poorly impersonated versions of Sean Connery & Morgan Freeman, and attempts to get grown women to text sweet booby shots to our 15 year old Hungarian intern, we began to appreciate the likelihood that our defrocking would could come on the heels of possible criminal charges.
It is only now in the onset of our third year on the air that our shenanigans have really begun to hit their stride so to speak, perfecting the art of pushing the envelope of bad taste right to the razor thin borderline of obscenity and/or pornography and the outright corruption of a minor, without crossing over. Congratulations us. As promised the link below is part 2 of the 2 year anniversary episode featuring members of the Fist Fam & others. Thank you for supporting the foolish absurdities of a gang of reputed wise crackers and the questionable buffoonery of known punchinellos.
Another brand new video from the crew. Rumor has it this the 1st of many about to drop from Gurp City South’s crown jewel, the Fist Family. Settin it off with the title track from the newly released album.
