That’s right Gurp City artists are independent as fuck… not so much because of any high minded artistic integrity, mostly because we’ve burnt far too many bridges for anyone to ride with us. But the motivation as to why we do everything ourselves is neither here nor there. The point I’m trying to drive home to you here is that Gurp City is outchea accomplishing an astounding amount of work for a bunch of grumpy, drug addled, disreputable booze hounds. And this Philo produced first single featuring a hook by John Boy, titled “By Myself”off Fist Fam’s upcoming album is their ode to that work ethic… “Better to show up drunk than call in sick”.
Honesty in rap music…just when you thought that had gone the way of Beta Max & Hammer pants, Free Radio is bringing it back like little face Benjamins, or like in 80’s movies when all you had to do to knock a fool unconscious was sneak up & karate chop them on the back of the neck, A-Team style. You know what else Free Radio learned from the A-Team? Sticking up for the little guy, speaking truth to power and that kinda shit. Also I know that Smidi is a straight thug who will knock you the fuck out but is terrified of flying just like B.A. Burackus, but I’m kind of burying the lead here. My point is that rap music has taken a turn towards celebrating ignorance at every level and while that can be shits & giggles galore, it seems to have become the be all end all of the medium. So at the risk of being indelicate I’ll just say that Free Radio thinks that’s a lot of bologna. Yeah I said it, and pardon my french but I’d go as far as to say it’s a bunch of hooey… you’re all getting a bum steer see? Well in the interest of righting the ship Gurp City South’s young bucket rap savant’s are putting their best foot forward with this new single & the coinciding video that features some pretty quintessential Asheville scenery like the outlaw Foundation skate spot built by the reprobates over at Push and their cohorts. So peep the video & grab the free download. The full length album “Powers That Be” is available now on their bandcamp page, link below.
Contrary to popular belief, or what the title may lead one to think, this is not yet another addition to the seemingly endless procession of politically charged rap songs addressing Chick-Fil-A’s open hostility towards the marital rights of the gays. Not simply because the debate between fowl & homo has become so vitriolic, or because Gus Cutty stuck the landing on this particular “controversy” months ago with his infamous portrait of Dan Cathy in the cosmetic drag of Lady Divine, but most importantly because we have other dead horses to beat. And that specific dead horse has really lost all of it’s shits & giggles. So we have made an executive decision to take the high road and go back to beating the dead horse that has endeared us to the hearts of dozens, i.e. fried food, booze and narcotics… also pussy. Today’s new release is a posse cut from a random collection of GCS’s rappers of ill repute, Philo, Smidi, Ronny Mac & Foul Mouth Jerk and is produced by Big Sean of Bored Stiff. So if you like songs about sticky fingers for various reasons this is probably the song for you… and if not fuck it, it was free. Unless of course you named some price other than zero dollars, in which case we thank you from the bottom of our black & shriveled, raisin-like hearts.
Ladies & Gentlemen, THE musical extravaganza of the summer is almost upon us. The Epic mini-festival inside a festival known as Gurp Fest 2012 will undoubtedly make affairs the likes of Bonaroo & the rest seem like turds in a punch bowl. And rightly so, as the awesome power of the Gurp City crew is leveled against the livers of Asheville, during it’s biggest public celebration of the year known as Belle Chere. Beginning Friday July 27th and continuing on to Saturday the 28th, the Emerald Lounge will be presenting members of both the NC & San Francisco branches of the Olympic drinking team known as Gurp City. The line up includes Z-Man, TopR, Weekend Cult, Eddie K, GFE, Foul Mouth Jerk, Free Radio, Al lover & The Haters, as well as a myriad of DJ’s, special guests, hot dog vendors and other various delights. But there will be NO, and I cannot stress this enough, NO fire jugglers/dancers and No fucking hula hoops. Please be sure to pack at least one extra liver, and a change of clothes, as you will surely shit your socks.
Well it’s official, the Ville Boyz era is over. Following their return home to NC from several years in San Francisco, and dropping months worth of singles for free download the VB’s are set to release their debut album under their new moniker Free Radio. The album is titled “The Powers That Be” and features appearances by Verse, Jeremy Indelicato, Tellio Prego, Dregs One, Patience & J Eazy of Weekend Cult.
Explaining the album’s concept & by extension the group’s name change producer/rapper Dirty Frost had this to say “Our songs are not untainted by the music industry, but in fact tainted to the point of rebelling completely against it. This album simply speaks from our hearts, and is an option for another path. A path towards unity and the power of people combined. A message of anti consumerism within a progressive culture that so often contradicts its self. For us, it is a step in the direction of breaking the chains that seem to keep new rap predictably similar. In my opinion this album brings the art of passion back to the music, with no regard for trying to be anything other than ourselves. It is socially aware, soulfully dirty, and variates musically between a number of world influences. Its the punk rock, of dirty hip hop. Free the Radio!”
Free Radio will be playing dual east coast/west coast album release parties. The NC show is at the Emerald Lounge in Asheville on Sat. June 2nd
The San Francisco show is at Rassela’s on Fillmore on Fri. June 8th with sets by Z-man, Eddie K, Grand Invincible & Rec League
Fist Fam’s OG Triple OG DJ Macon Beatz steps back into the mixtape spotlight with his brand new All Gurp City Mix. Perfect party music. So don’t sleep… Pass out.
It’s Worst Case Thursday once again, and that means free music. This week we got some brand new shit from NDSkyz, an Asheville, NC based crew that is affiliated with some of the homies in Gurp City South. Rumor has it Smidi aka Hollywood Cole himself, will be appearing on their upcoming full length. We’ve been playing this track on the radio for the last couple of weeks and I’m definitely feeling it. But that should go without saying, cause I don’t play whack ass poodle music. It’s just a thing I have about stuff that sucks vs. stuff that’s fresh. Suffice it to say I’m expecting good things from NDSkyz so you can likely expect more free downloads from them right here as the album release draws closer. Enjoy:
As promised we are back on our “Best Free Music In The Biz” grind. I guess the Ville Boyz heard that recently released Panama Jack EP from the Fist Fam & decided to raise the ante. As they move ever closer to releasing their new full length they hit us with better songs each go-round. I have been a fan of everything I’ve heard off this album so far, but this new track titled “We” is easily my favorite. Speaking of which, these little bastards better get me on this album to do what I do best, which is spit 16 square bars of hot math. Yeah, that’s right in case you didn’t know, Foul Mouth Jerk is the Good Will Hunting of piping hot math. It’s been said, it can’t be taken back.
Anyway, don’t sleep click the link below & grab the hot fiah. And feel free to leave a comment below thanking me profusely for the sweet exclusive.
For those that don’t know, every Thursday from 10pm to midnight several members of the Gurp City South crew, namely myself (Foul Mouth Jerk), TopR Holiday, Adam Strange & Smidi host an internet radio show on Ashevillefm.org, appropriately known as the Worst Case Scenario. The program is basically two hours of dubious opinions, wild, baseless speculation and slanderous accusations that push the envelope of free speech to the outermost reaches of dickishness, with bits of rap music peppered liberally throughout. It’s sort of like a drunk version of Hardball meets Kool DJ Red Alert… with racist jokes. Recurring guests include a case of PBR, the head of our research department (i.e. one gossipin ass black chick) known as the Snow Shark, and a 15 y.o Hungarian boy affectionately referred to as Serbian Beiber, who serves as an intern, but whose main purpose is to retrieve beers & keep us abreast of how low the standards of behavior for teenage girls has fallen. Needless to say it’s the cutting edge in tasteless public discourse.
That being said, I have been promising on air to post highlights from the show on the site for months. And while I wouldn’t count on this now being a new, reliable occurrence on my part, I will be posting what I think to be the funnier snippets from random episodes as frequently as my feeble work ethic will allow. The current posting being an episode in which multiple members of the staff had split a bag of shrooms just before going on the air.
So without further ado…
Finally got the Asheville edition of the Fist Fam’s album release party booked. Emerald Lounge, Friday June 10th. With The Fist Fam, Foul Mouth Jerk, TopR, The Ville Boys, Smidi, & DJ Football… Probably some special guests… certainly some drunk people… undoubtedly a titty will pop out
