That’s right Gurp City artists are independent as fuck… not so much because of any high minded artistic integrity, mostly because we’ve burnt far too many bridges for anyone to ride with us. But the motivation as to why we do everything ourselves is neither here nor there. The point I’m trying to drive home to you here is that Gurp City is outchea accomplishing an astounding amount of work for a bunch of grumpy, drug addled, disreputable booze hounds. And this Philo produced first single featuring a hook by John Boy, titled “By Myself”off Fist Fam’s upcoming album is their ode to that work ethic… “Better to show up drunk than call in sick”.

Oscar Wilde once said “Work is the curse of the drinking class”. Well it’s my opinon that no one making music today quite embodies that sentiment as much as Free Radio, and perhaps this song more than any. The title of their latest single seems pretty self explanitory. “Payroll” is kind of a modern day interpritation of Tenessee Ernie Ford’s “16 Tons”, if you catch my drift. Which I’m guessing you don’t since you’re not an octogenarian. Nonetheless, the song is a brilliant account of the bitter pill most people in this country are swallowing on a daily basis as the overworked & underpaid “heros” of the American salt mine. It’s the lead single from Free radio’s debut full-length Powers That Be and will be followed up by some videos in the near future. So grab this single for your ipod, take it to work and put it on blast while your considering whether or not to choke someone from middle management to sleep if they take that tone with you again. Because as another great philosopher of the late 20th century once asked “Is it in bad taste to wish that your boss would get ass raped?”
Ladies & Gentlemen, THE musical extravaganza of the summer is almost upon us. The Epic mini-festival inside a festival known as Gurp Fest 2012 will undoubtedly make affairs the likes of Bonaroo & the rest seem like turds in a punch bowl. And rightly so, as the awesome power of the Gurp City crew is leveled against the livers of Asheville, during it’s biggest public celebration of the year known as Belle Chere. Beginning Friday July 27th and continuing on to Saturday the 28th, the Emerald Lounge will be presenting members of both the NC & San Francisco branches of the Olympic drinking team known as Gurp City. The line up includes Z-Man, TopR, Weekend Cult, Eddie K, GFE, Foul Mouth Jerk, Free Radio, Al lover & The Haters, as well as a myriad of DJ’s, special guests, hot dog vendors and other various delights. But there will be NO, and I cannot stress this enough, NO fire jugglers/dancers and No fucking hula hoops. Please be sure to pack at least one extra liver, and a change of clothes, as you will surely shit your socks.
Well it’s official, the Ville Boyz era is over. Following their return home to NC from several years in San Francisco, and dropping months worth of singles for free download the VB’s are set to release their debut album under their new moniker Free Radio. The album is titled “The Powers That Be” and features appearances by Verse, Jeremy Indelicato, Tellio Prego, Dregs One, Patience & J Eazy of Weekend Cult.
Explaining the album’s concept & by extension the group’s name change producer/rapper Dirty Frost had this to say “Our songs are not untainted by the music industry, but in fact tainted to the point of rebelling completely against it. This album simply speaks from our hearts, and is an option for another path. A path towards unity and the power of people combined. A message of anti consumerism within a progressive culture that so often contradicts its self. For us, it is a step in the direction of breaking the chains that seem to keep new rap predictably similar. In my opinion this album brings the art of passion back to the music, with no regard for trying to be anything other than ourselves. It is socially aware, soulfully dirty, and variates musically between a number of world influences. Its the punk rock, of dirty hip hop. Free the Radio!”
Free Radio will be playing dual east coast/west coast album release parties. The NC show is at the Emerald Lounge in Asheville on Sat. June 2nd
The San Francisco show is at Rassela’s on Fillmore on Fri. June 8th with sets by Z-man, Eddie K, Grand Invincible & Rec League
Asheville native, long time Gurp City South collaborator & burgeoning super-producer Commissioner Gordon has returned to his adoring public and is getting a lot of love in the blogviroment with his latest single and continuing collusion with eastern Carolina’s current apex predator King Mez. This track is merely the lead off to another album featuring said partnership titled “My Everlasting Zeal”. You may know the Commish’s handiwork from such grammy worthy endeavors as Weekend Cult’s (formerly Fist Fam) “SF Bay”, and together with Mez they may be, dare I say the best rapper-producer duo since Primo & Guru. So grab this free download & peep the skill set.
Next Friday, February 24th at the Elbo Room in San Francisco marks the album release party for the Fist Fam’s latest full length (yes another one) “Weekend Cult”. That being more or less the starter pistol for a string of releases by the Gurp City South Crew. 2012 will see albums from TopR, Foul Mouth Jerk, Scofflaw, The Ville Boyz, the Worst, and possibly more. So in honor of a future that is startlingly bright for a confederation of potential cirrhosis candidates & to educate these young buckets only just now upping themselves on the science of Gurpology, we take a look back at the history of the Gurp City Crew by posting this link to the in-retrospect-ironically named “Dead In A Year” a remastered compilation of hits from 1999-2004. This noteworthy collection of classics features the distinguished production high-jinks of Verse Murphy, Z-Trip & Radar as well as the superior rap shenanigans of OG Triple OG’s Brandon B, Eddie K, Luke Sick & Z-Man. Aside from being inundated with an overwhelming amount of gems that would hit just as hard if dropped in the distant future, it contains some of the funniest skits ever put to tape. In particular my favorite skit of all time “Coked Out In The 80’s” , few things are simultaneously this funny & historically accurate. So peep the skit & follow it back to the album, which is amazingly, also available for free download.
Tired of your shitty job? Don’t believe anything you see on the news? Already sick of the relentless duplicity of election season? Wondering about what the fuck those unpronounceable ingredients on the side of your food label are? Worried that all these concerns and more have lead you to drinking & smoking too much? … Yeah, Dirty Frost is too.
If you can relate feel free to download his new exclusive single “The Power of Confusion”.
Has anyone besides me ever wondered in the 21st century, this era of cel phones and the end of the phone booth, where the fuck Clark Kent now changes into Superman? Which only begs the further question, that since phone booths were made of glass, why did he ever bother to “hide” in one before he changed any way? I mean is it providing any greater subterfuge that thin air was not? I don’t know, I guess since we as a people patronized him by turning a blind eye to that masterful disguise of one thin pair of spectacles, we kind of lowered the bar and could expect that kind of lackluster work ethic henceforth. What does any of this have to do with the new Ville Boyz single? Nothing really, just that the title is “Up, Up & Away” which I guess put me in some kind of pensive mood, contemplating the idiosyncrasies of the Son of Jor-El.
Anyway, the first free single from Gurp City South of 2012 is here & surprise, it’s from The Ville Boyz. Enjoy it in the loving embrace of Earth’s yellow sun.
Unsurprisingly your boy Foulio is once again a day late & a dollar short on his Thursday free music grind. Luckily the Ville Boyz are seemingly far more up to the task. So this week freebies come on Friday. As usual they hit me on the head with some top quality rap music, this one featuring The Fist Fam’s own special needs Nate Dog known as J EZ. So without further ado I’m gonna go nurse this hangover & you can click the link below & get your free sample of Carolina’s finest.
In the first year of broadcasting Wost Case Scenario we often assumed that we would be kicked off the air largely for the slapdash, lackluster, obnoxiously negligent manner of the show, or perhaps just because of the sheer heroic volume of wanton on-air drinking by the cast. In year two, between the shameless sexual harassment of female callers by poorly impersonated versions of Sean Connery & Morgan Freeman, and attempts to get grown women to text sweet booby shots to our 15 year old Hungarian intern, we began to appreciate the likelihood that our defrocking would could come on the heels of possible criminal charges.
It is only now in the onset of our third year on the air that our shenanigans have really begun to hit their stride so to speak, perfecting the art of pushing the envelope of bad taste right to the razor thin borderline of obscenity and/or pornography and the outright corruption of a minor, without crossing over. Congratulations us. As promised the link below is part 2 of the 2 year anniversary episode featuring members of the Fist Fam & others. Thank you for supporting the foolish absurdities of a gang of reputed wise crackers and the questionable buffoonery of known punchinellos.
