Not long ago I was perusing one of my favorite music blogs, as I tend to do, when I stumbled across some posted video footage of some lackluster LA rapper’s show in San Francisco that was decidedly sleep-inducing. The response from the Bay Area rap fans was turning from disappointed to openly hostile when an audience member rushed the stage demanding the artist either step his performance up in the immediate, or turn over the stage to someone who would. As the stage invader/crusader for justice stepped into the spotlight I realized “holy shit that’s Dreg’s One” pullin the old KRS ONE heave-ho number on this poor slouch. But in the words of the Blast Master “what the fuck? 2o bucks for a rap show is still 20 bucks”… and it was heart-warming to know that there are still some people out there who demand a higher standard for their wampum.
You may be asking “Foulio, what the hell does this have to do with Dregs One’s new video “Revolutionaries”? Well simply that Dregs don’t play that shit. And if he doesn’t like it, he’s gonna stand up & speak about it. Whether the government or your rap show, dude’s gonna overthrow some shit. This one features another GCS repeat offender White Mic. So click play & take a shot of this act-right.
It’s beginning to appear that Bored Stiff’s White Mic is running some kind of foot race with Al Lover for most content posted to this site in recent memory. I don’t know what kind of time this guy has on his hands to be recording & releasing this much music, but this kind of work ethic is definitely not concurrent with the title of his latest full length release “Fightin’ Off Success”. For that matter neither is the rather formidable roster of collaborators judging from the track listing. Guests include golden age heavyweights Casual & Sadat X, underground stalwart & Living Legends member The Grouch as well as one of my personal favorites, Gurp City All Star & crime noir author Luke Sick. So Mic, if success is your opponent and this is your idea of fighting it, prepare yourself for a Gerry Cooney sized ass whippin.
Following the release of what is undoubtedly the definitive musical work on the subject of the relationship between ferret & vegetable ( did you know a group of ferrets is called a business? True story), with the Johnny Appleseed of Gurp City, Z-Man, White Mic returned to the studio with Bay legends Andre Nickatina and Del Tha Funky Homosapien, for a long overdue treatise on loneliness. And as a birthday present for Hitler (I can only assume) he posted it for free download on 4/20. As usual I was too busy circling the drain to have posted it here on time. But as they say, it’s not a gimmick it’s a lifestyle. So if your drinking problem, nay, adventures are as uproarious as mine & like me missed this one last week. Please have another crack at it…
While I constantly hear people complain that hip hop is dead or that rap is all commercial bullshit, I couldn’t disagree more. While there has certainly been a deluge of craptitude of the 1st order it has become clear to me that one simply has to know how to navigate the sea of turds to find the many gems. In that spirit 2011 was undoubtedly an auspicious year for rock solid rap music especially of the lyrical variety. But I have to be honest with you. There was something missing… something almost intangible, something I just couldn’t quite put my finger on. Then like a punch in the dick it hit me… Who is speaking for the vegetables? Not just for the vegetables, but who is rapping from the perspective of vegetables yet unpicked in the garden? And for that matter who will be the voice of the voiceless rodents out to purloin those vegetables to their own ends, such as the wily ferret? When God, when is the thieving weasels time to shine?!!
Well I should have known better. Just as dark despair seemed to close it’s chilly mitts around me here come Z-man & Bored Stiff’s White Mic with the album I think we can all say we’ve been waiting for “The Vegetable and The Ferret”. For all you not-knowin members of the ignorati, a group of ferrets is called a “business”. Yes a business of ferrets, that is a fact. So this album is appropriately named because Z & Mic are on there business here. The lyrics, the beats, the whole nine. And yes they rap about topics other than delicious produce & it’s known predators, though admittedly I could have listened to an entire album of just that. Now some of you are undoubtedly saying to yourselves “But Foulio, perhaps you just like this because of your known predilection for animal humor” to which I say Fuck You! You just feast your gaze on that album cover & tell me that the Ferret wasn’t the role Z-Man was born to play! Also it’s not just the single, they’re giving you philistines the whole album as a free download. So click the link & get what your life’s been missing.
